Creeping Phlox (Stoloniferous Phlox)

Plant in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; creeping phlox is the shade-tolerant native phlox species of the Southern Appalachian woodland floor, quite different from the sun-loving moss phlox (Phlox subulata) that cascades over walls in full sun. It produces fragrant lavender, pink, or blue-violet flowers in early spring just as trilliums and spring ephemerals are blooming, spreading by stolons to form a low, attractive mat of semi-evergreen foliage that brightens shaded areas year-round. It performs best in the cool, moist, shaded conditions of a woodland garden and is not suited to zone 9 and warmer. Named cultivars like 'Blue Ridge' (blue-violet) and 'Sherwood Purple' (vivid purple) are widely available from native plant nurseries.
