Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial shade to full sun; parsley hawthorn is the most delicate and ornamental of the southeastern hawthorns, distinguished by its exquisitely cut, deeply lobed leaves that truly resemble flat-leaf parsley — giving it an unusually fine, lacy texture among native trees. White flower clusters in spring are followed by small red berries in fall that provide wildlife food. It grows naturally as an understory tree in moist bottomland forests and shaded river banks throughout the Southeast and tolerates shade better than most hawthorn species. The gray-brown bark flakes to reveal attractive smooth orange-tan underbark. An underused native tree that deserves much wider garden use for its ornamental leaf texture and wildlife value.
