Cranberry Hibiscus (African Rosemallow)

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade after soil warms to 70°F; the deep burgundy-red, deeply lobed foliage is ornamental throughout the season, making this one of the most attractive edible plants for a zone 9–11 garden. The young leaves have a tart, cranberry-sorrel flavor excellent in salads, wraps, and as a garnish; the fuchsia flowers are also edible and make a vivid cranberry-colored tea. In zone 9–11 it grows as a perennial but blooms only in short days, producing flowers in late fall; in cooler zones treat as a warm-season annual for leaf harvest. Cut back by half in late summer to promote fresh tender growth.
