Опис
Swamp Dogwood is a large, multi-stemmed native shrub native to wet thickets, streambanks, pond margins, and swamp edges throughout eastern North America from New Brunswick to Florida and west to Oklahoma, tolerating prolonged seasonal flooding and thriving in moist to wet, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade. It produces flat-topped clusters of small white flowers in June and July that attract a wide variety of native bees and other pollinators, followed by striking porcelain-blue fruits on red-stemmed clusters that ripen in August and September and are eagerly consumed by over 40 species of songbirds, including wood thrush, catbirds, and warblers. The purplish-red winter stems provide attractive four-season interest, and the shrub suckers readily to form dense thickets that stabilize streambanks and provide excellent nesting cover for wildlife. An outstanding plant for wet native gardens, rain gardens, or bio-swales where its moisture tolerance is an asset rather than a compromise.

Plant nursery transplants in spring in wet to moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade. Swamp Dogwood thrives along stream banks, pond margins, wet meadow edges, and seasonally flooded areas; it is excellent for rain gardens and bio-retention swales where the soil remains consistently moist.
