Опис
Plant in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade; pagoda dogwood is a striking native understory tree distinguished from flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) by its horizontally tiered, pagoda-like branching structure and alternate (rather than opposite) leaves — hence both common names. The flat-topped clusters of small creamy-white flowers in late spring attract many native bee species, and the blue-black berries on red stems in late summer are highly attractive to migrating warblers and thrushes. The plant thrives in cool, moist, shaded conditions and performs best in zones 3–6; it struggles in southern heat and is not suited to zone 8 and south. Fall foliage is an attractive rose-burgundy. The horizontal branching structure is most dramatic in winter silhouette, making it a year-round specimen tree.
