Опис
Corkwood is one of the rarest and most botanically unusual native shrubs in North America — a monotypic genus (Leitneriaceae family) with no close relatives among living plants, native to the tidal swamps, brackish marshes, and wet bottomlands of scattered, disjunct localities in Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri, where it forms thickets in periodically flooded, organic soils. Its most remarkable characteristic is its wood, which is lighter than cork — making it the least dense wood of any known North American woody plant — and the plant occupies a phylogenetically isolated position in the evolutionary tree of flowering plants. Catkin-like male and female flowers appear on separate plants in spring before the leaves emerge. Despite its rarity, Corkwood is adaptable to a range of wet to moist soil conditions in partial shade to full sun and is occasionally available from specialty native plant nurseries; plant male and female specimens together for seed production. Listed as threatened in several states and on NatureServe's watch list.

Plant nursery transplants in spring in wet to moist, slightly acidic, sandy or loamy soil in partial shade to full sun. Corkwood is a rare species that should only be sourced from specialty native plant nurseries; it is listed as threatened or of conservation concern in most states where it occurs.
