Coral Fountain (Firecracker Plant)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade; coral fountain (firecracker plant) is a uniquely textural and continuously blooming tropical perennial with masses of thin, arching, rush-like green stems cascading in a weeping habit, studded nearly year-round with small, tubular, coral-red flowers that hummingbirds visit with enthusiasm. The stems have virtually no leaves — the photosynthesis occurs in the green stems themselves, giving the plant an unusual, airy, almost fern-like texture when not in bloom that is strikingly different from any other flowering plant. It is exceptionally drought, heat, and salt tolerant once established and performs at its best cascading over retaining walls, spilling from large containers, or planted in raised beds where the arching, weeping habit shows to best effect. In zone 9 it may suffer frost damage to stems but typically regrows from established roots. A yellow-flowered form is also available.
