Copper Iris (Red Iris)

Plant rhizome divisions in moist to wet, slightly acidic soil in partial shade to full sun; copper iris is the only native American iris with brick-red to burnt-orange-copper flowers — a unique and striking color that no other wild iris can match. It grows naturally in swamps, bayou margins, and bottomland forests of the lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast, where it tolerates periodic inundation. The plant is one of the parent species of the spectacular Louisiana iris hybrids and contributes their warm red-copper-orange color range to hybrid cultivars. Plant at pond margins, in consistently wet rain garden areas, or in soil that stays moist throughout the growing season.
