Copper Canyon Daisy (Mountain Marigold, Lemmon's Marigold)

Plant in well-drained, lean soil in full sun; copper canyon daisy is one of the finest large perennial flowering shrubs for zone 8–11 gardens — a sprawling, aromatic shrub covered in masses of small, bright golden-yellow daisy flowers in fall and winter (and sometimes spring) when very little else is blooming. The deeply divided, fernlike leaves are pungently aromatic (a strong citrus-mint-marigold scent that is powerfully deer repellent) and retain an attractive gray-green color through much of the year. It is outstanding for fall color, butterfly attraction, and combining with blue salvias or purple ageratum for a stunning gold-and-purple fall combination. Prune back by one-third after each bloom flush to keep the plant compact; an unpruned shrub can spread to 6 feet or more. In zone 8, top growth may be killed by hard freezes but roots resprout reliably.
