Plant in sandy, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial to full shade; coontie is the only cycad native to continental North America and the only host plant for the spectacular Atala butterfly (Eumaeus atala), a striking Caribbean species with iridescent blue-green wings that was once thought extinct in Florida before recovering after landscape plantings of coontie increased. This prehistoric-looking plant with stiff, dark green pinnate fronds emerges almost stemless from a large underground trunk and is extraordinarily drought, heat, and salt-spray tolerant once established in zone 8–11. The large red seeds are produced in dramatic cones and are toxic; plant away from areas accessible to children and pets.
