Confederate Rose (Cotton Rose)

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; confederate rose is one of the most spectacular autumn-blooming flowering shrubs of the American South, producing enormous (4–6 inch), double, peony-like flowers that open white in the morning and gradually deepen through pink to rose and finally deep red by evening — the color change of a single flower over one day is one of the most remarkable visual effects in horticulture. Single-flowered forms also exist. Blooming from late summer through frost, confederate rose provides critical fall color just when other shrubs are fading. The plant grows very large — a true shrub-tree — and propagates effortlessly from cuttings, which root in a cup of water on the windowsill. It was passed from garden to garden across the antebellum South this way for generations. Prune to 2–3 feet in late winter; the plant regrows vigorously each season and blooms on new wood.
