Опис
Common ironweed is a tough, adaptable native perennial found naturally in moist prairies, roadsides, and streambank edges across the central and eastern United States — its compact size (3–5 feet) compared to tall ironweed makes it more useful in typical garden settings while delivering the same brilliant purple pollinator impact. Dense, flat-topped clusters of vivid purple flowers open from midsummer into fall, overlapping with many other prairie perennials and providing critical late-season nectar for migrating monarchs, swallowtails, and native bumblebees. Plants spread slowly by rhizomes and self-seeding, eventually forming clumps that can be divided every 3–4 years to maintain vigor and share plants. Combine with yellow-flowered natives like sneezeweed, black-eyed Susan, and prairie coneflower for maximum visual impact — the complementary warm yellow and cool purple combination is a classic of native meadow plantings.

Direct sow seeds on bare soil in fall; seeds require cold stratification to germinate well — fall sowing lets winter temperatures do this naturally; thin to 24-inch spacing in spring once seedlings reach 3–4 inches tall.
