Опис
Climbing aster is the only vining aster native to North America, an extraordinary scrambling perennial from the Gulf Coastal Plain and Florida that clambers 6–15 feet through shrubs and fences to display enormous masses of small, lavender-to-pink flowers with yellow centers in late fall, often blooming well into December in zone 8 and 9 gardens. Because it flowers so late in the season — October through December in the Deep South — climbing aster serves as a critical last nectar source for late-migrating monarchs and queens, sulphur butterflies, and overwintering native bees that remain active through early winter in the Gulf Coast region. Plant it where it can scramble through a wax myrtle, yaupon holly, or native shrub border; its somewhat weedy scrambling stems are hidden by surrounding plants while the spectacular late-autumn bloom is the garden's last big show before frost. Cut back hard in late winter to control spread and encourage vigorous new stems for next season's bloom.

Plant near a fence, shrub, or trellis in moist to wet, acidic soil in partial shade to full sun; stems scramble and sprawl through surrounding vegetation rather than twining — provide sturdy support or allow it to clamber through a native shrub border.
