Опис
Virgin's bower is the most widespread and cold-hardy of all native North American clematis, scrambling through shrubs and small trees along streams, roadsides, and woodland edges from Nova Scotia to Florida — in late summer it smothers its support in masses of small, four-petaled white flowers that are intensely fragrant and attract a spectacular diversity of native bees, wasps, beetles, and butterflies seeking late-summer nectar. After bloom, the flowers are replaced by feathery, silvery seed plumes that persist through fall and winter, creating a spectacular 'old man's beard' effect in the landscape — a three-season ornamental vine of understated elegance. While not as showy as large-flowered hybrid clematis, its fine-textured floral masses and subsequent silky seedheads provide months of changing interest with zero maintenance; it is drought-tolerant once established and pest-free. Self-seeds freely to form spreading colonies — allow it to naturalize in native shrub borders or along a fence where it can sprawl without becoming an obstacle.

Plant in moist to moderately dry, slightly acidic soil in partial to full shade near a fence, trellis, or shrubby thicket; virgin's bower scrambles through shrubs and climbs by leaf petioles — site where it can naturalize freely as it self-seeds prolifically.
