Plant in well-drained, lean, alkaline to neutral soil in full sun; desert willow is one of the most beautiful flowering native trees of the Southwest and South Texas, producing masses of showy, orchid-like flowers in pink, lavender, rose, white, or bicolor from late spring through fall in multiple flushes — a spectacular hummingbird and butterfly plant. Despite its name it is not a willow at all but rather a member of the Bignonia family, closely related to catalpa. The long, willow-like leaves emerge late in spring and drop early in fall. It is remarkably drought tolerant once established, thriving on natural rainfall alone in zone 7–11. The decorative seed pods hang on through winter. Many named cultivars are available with different flower colors and forms; 'Dark Storm,' 'Bubba,' and 'Art's Seedless' are popular selections for southern gardens.

Plant container-grown trees in spring in very well-drained, sandy or rocky, alkaline to neutral, lean soil in full sun; desert willow is native to dry arroyos, stream banks, and desert washes of the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts and is extremely drought tolerant — it actually performs better with no supplemental irrigation after the first year.
