Plant in consistently moist to wet, fertile, slightly acidic soil in partial shade to full sun; white turtlehead grows naturally in stream banks, wet meadows, and swamp margins across eastern North America. The inflated, snapdragon-like white (sometimes flushed pink) flowers appear in late summer to fall, providing late-season nectar for bumblebees that are heavy enough to force their way inside the closed flower mouth. It is also the primary larval host plant for the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly, a declining species that depends specifically on this plant. The plant spreads slowly by rhizome. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional blooming.
