Опис
Plant in moist to dry, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun; chalk maple is a small-to-medium native understory maple of the Southeast Appalachians and Piedmont, closely related to sugar maple but significantly more heat-and-drought-tolerant and better suited to the zone 7–9 garden than its more famous relative. The common name comes from the distinctive light-colored, chalky-white to pale gray bark. The 3–5 lobed leaves turn magnificent shades of yellow, orange, and scarlet in fall — one of the best native maples for fall color in the South. It grows naturally as an understory tree on rocky slopes and bluffs with well-drained, calcareous soils. An outstanding and underused native small tree for shaded gardens in the Southeast where sugar maple and Japanese maple both struggle with the heat and humidity.
