Ceylon Spinach (Red Malabar Spinach)

Direct sow or transplant in moist, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade with a support to climb; Ceylon spinach is the red-stemmed form of Malabar spinach, producing striking bright-red vining stems, dark green to purplish leaves, and decorative dark reddish-purple berries. Like green Malabar spinach (B. alba), the leaves are thick, succulent, and mild-flavored when young, used fresh in salads or cooked as a spinach substitute in stir-fries, soups, and curries throughout tropical Asia. The red-stemmed form is highly ornamental — it can be used as a colorful edible trellis plant or allowed to cascade over a fence. It thrives in heat that wilts true spinach and is particularly productive in Gulf Coast summer gardens. In zone 9–11 it overwinters as a short-lived perennial. Tolerates partial shade better than most summer leafy greens.
