Опис
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic, sandy to loamy, deep soil in full sun — the American chestnut was once the dominant tree of the eastern forest, comprising 25% of all trees from New England to the Deep South and providing the primary mast crop sustaining deer, turkeys, bears, and passenger pigeons across millions of acres. The introduction of chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) from Asia in the early 1900s killed an estimated 4 billion trees within 50 years in the most catastrophic ecological disaster in American history. The root system of most trees survives and sends up shoots that grow to 10–20 feet before dying of blight — these sprouts can produce a small crop of nuts. The American Chestnut Foundation has developed blight-tolerant hybrid trees (about 94% American chestnut genetics) and restoration planting is actively underway. Planting American chestnut seedlings or blight-resistant hybrids is a meaningful conservation act; the trees grow fast, produce sweet nuts, and support 125 species of caterpillars.

Plant fresh nuts or container-grown seedlings in fall in well-drained, slightly acidic, sandy to loamy, deep soil in full sun; American chestnut requires two or more trees for cross-pollination to set nuts. Consider blight-resistant hybrid trees from the American Chestnut Foundation for greater long-term survival.
