Cast Iron Plant

Plant in any soil in full shade to deep shade — cast iron plant lives up to its common name as the most tolerant, indestructible landscape plant available for zones 7–11. No other evergreen perennial survives deep shade, drought, root competition, salt, flooding, neglect, and poor soil with the same equanimity. The broad, lance-shaped, glossy dark-green leaves (12–24 inches long) emerge from ground-level rhizomes and form a dense, weed-suppressing clump that deepens and spreads slowly over years. It is the premier plant for impossible spots: the north side of the house, under overhanging eaves, beneath dense magnolias or live oaks where nothing else grows. Variegated forms ('Milky Way' with white speckles, 'Asahi' with white-tipped leaves) add more visual interest. The plant grows very slowly — increase your initial spacing to 18 inches and know it will take 3–5 years to fill in. Once established, it is permanent: decades-old plantings of cast iron plant are commonly found thriving with zero maintenance.
