Plant in moist to wet, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade — Canada anemone is one of the most vigorous native groundcovers available, producing a long-lasting display of pure white, 1.5-inch five-petaled flowers above attractive, deeply lobed leaves from late spring through early summer, then spreading steadily by rhizome to form a dense, weed-suppressing colony. It grows naturally in moist prairies, stream banks, and moist, open woodland edges from Canada south to the mid-Atlantic states. Its aggressive spreading habit makes it ideal for naturalizing large, moist areas along pond edges, woodland margins, and rain garden overflows — it quickly colonizes disturbed, moist ground and crowd out invasive weeds. Use it with appropriate caution in smaller gardens where it may overwhelm neighbors. An outstanding erosion-control plant for moist, sunny to partly shaded slopes.
