Plant near a very sturdy fence, masonry wall, pergola, or large tree in full sun to partial shade in any well-drained soil — trumpet vine is extraordinarily adaptable and drought tolerant; the large orange-red trumpet flowers appear from June through September and are among the most important native nectar sources for ruby-throated hummingbirds in the eastern US. The vine climbs by aerial roots and is very vigorous — growing 20–30 feet and sending up root suckers widely around the base. Control by mowing suckers, cutting back hard annually, and avoiding planting near the foundation of structures where the roots can damage masonry. The sap causes skin irritation in many people. Despite its aggressive character, trumpet vine is exceptional in rural settings where it can be allowed to cover a fence, outbuilding, or dead tree. The contact dermatitis risk from sap is real; wear gloves when pruning.
