Plant in moist, peat-based, slightly acidic soil in bright indirect shade; calatheas are among the most spectacularly decorative foliage plants in the world, producing large, rounded or lance-shaped leaves with intricate patterns of dark green, silvery green, and cream in bold graphic patterns that look almost painted. C. orbifolia in particular produces enormous round leaves with elegant silver stripes. The foliage of most calatheas moves with the light — leaves rise in the evening and lower in the morning in a circadian rhythm that gives the related marantas their name 'prayer plants.' In zone 10–12 calatheas thrive as outdoor shade garden plants under tree canopy; in zone 9a they are outstanding patio container plants in bright, indirect shade. They require consistently moist (but never waterlogged) soil, high humidity, and protection from drafts and direct sun.
