Blue Hosta (Tall Cluster-Flowered Hosta)

Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to deep shade — blue hosta (Hosta ventricosa) is a large, vigorous species from eastern Asia notable for producing some of the deepest, most attractive purple-lavender flowers in the genus — tall, attractive scapes of deep violet bell-shaped flowers in midsummer that are significantly more ornamental than the pale flowers of most hostas. The large, rounded, dark green to slightly glaucous leaves form a lush, mounded clump 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide. It is also one of the more heat-tolerant hosta species, performing well in zone 8–9 in consistently moist, deeply shaded conditions where many hybrid cultivars decline. Unlike most hostas, it seeds true from open-pollinated seeds, making it easy to naturalize in appropriate shaded conditions. The cultivar 'Aureomarginata' (golden-edged blue hosta) adds variegated interest with a gold to cream margin on the dark leaves.
