Blue Elderberry (Blueberry Elder)

Plant in any moist to well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade — blue elderberry is the western North American native elderberry, native from British Columbia to Baja California and east to the Rocky Mountains, producing large, flat-topped clusters of dark blue to blue-black berries with a distinctive waxy, blue-gray bloom (giving both plant and fruit their names). The berries are slightly sweeter than American elderberry (S. canadensis) and are used the same way — in jellies, juices, wines, elderflower cordial, and traditional medicine.
