Опис
Plant in moist, strongly acidic, humus-rich soil in full shade; deer fern is one of the most distinctive of all woodland ferns, producing two very different types of fronds simultaneously from the central crown: outer, spreading, dark-green sterile fronds that lie nearly flat to the ground, and inner, erect, narrowly pinnate fertile fronds that stand upright with narrow, blade-like pinnae bearing the spore-producing sori on their undersides. This dramatic dimorphism makes it immediately recognizable in the forest. It is a characteristic plant of the cool, moist, acidic coniferous and mixed forests of the Pacific Northwest (where it is extremely common) and also occurs in Atlantic coastal forests and in Europe, where it was traditionally fed to deer (hence the common name). It requires cool, humid conditions and consistently moist, strongly acidic soil to thrive — it is less suited to hot, dry interior gardens. An outstanding structural fern for the cool, shaded woodland garden.

Plant divisions or container-grown plants in spring in moist, acidic (pH 4.5–6.0), humus-rich, well-drained soil in full shade; deer fern requires strongly acidic soil and consistent moisture — it declines in neutral or alkaline conditions. It is best suited to the Pacific Coast, Pacific Northwest, and mild Atlantic coastal gardens with cool summers.
