Black Mondo Grass

Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade; black mondo grass is one of the most dramatic and unique foliage plants available for shaded landscapes, producing very narrow, arching, strappy leaves that are such a dark purple-black that they appear nearly jet black — an almost unparalleled foliage color in horticulture. Small, pale pink flowers on short stalks appear in summer, followed by jet-black berries that provide additional ornamental interest through winter. It spreads slowly by underground rhizomes, forming low, slow-expanding clumps that work beautifully as a groundcover, edging plant, or textural accent in shade gardens. The black foliage creates extraordinary contrast with silver-leaved plants (Japanese painted fern, brunnera) or with the bright lime-green of golden creeping Jenny.
