Bignay (Bugnay, Chinese Laurel)

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade — bignay is a medium-sized tropical tree of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, producing spectacular long (12–18 inch) pendulous clusters of small (pea-sized) berries that ripen from green through red to deep purple-black in sequence on the same cluster, creating a striking multi-colored effect. The berries have a pleasant tart-sweet flavor with some astringency and are eaten fresh, made into wine, juice, and jam; in the Philippines bignay wine is a traditional fermented beverage. The tree is dioecious and shade-tolerant, growing naturally as an understory tree in mixed tropical forests. The polished, reddish-brown seeds (resembling small nutmegs) are made into decorative necklaces in the Philippines.
