Bigleaf Snowbell is a beautiful native understory shrub or small tree, native to the moist, rich deciduous forests of the southeastern United States from Virginia and Tennessee south to Florida and west to Louisiana, where it grows as a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree 6–12 feet tall in the shade of larger hardwoods and pines along stream terraces and ravine slopes. In May and June it produces cascading racemes of fragrant, pure white, bell-shaped flowers with conspicuous yellow stamens that cover the branches in a spectacular display and attract native bees; the flowers are best appreciated from below, where the full pendant clusters are visible against the dark canopy. The large, soft-textured leaves (up to 5 inches long) give the plant its common name and create an attractive bold texture in the shade garden. Grow in moist, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade and protect from drought; it is more adaptable to heat and humidity than Japanese snowbell (Styrax japonicus) and is a superior choice for southeastern gardens.

Plant nursery transplants in spring in moist, acidic, well-drained to moist soil in partial shade. Bigleaf Snowbell is most spectacular when planted where its pendant white flowers can be viewed from below, such as on a slope above a path or at the edge of a raised bed.
