Опис
Supplejack is a vigorous native woody vine of bottomland forests, swamp margins, and moist woodland edges across the Gulf Coast and southeastern United States, climbing high into the forest canopy by twining and branching through the upper shrub and tree layers. Its flexible, wiry stems gave rise to the common name — the wood was historically used to make walking sticks, basket frames, and tool handles because of its exceptional suppleness and strength. Small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in late spring produce blue-black drupes that ripen in fall and are consumed by wood ducks, wild turkeys, and at least a dozen species of songbirds and small mammals, making supplejack one of the highest-value wildlife vines in the region. In naturalized woodland gardens or large-scale habitat restorations, allow it to climb through native trees and form dense thickets that provide both food and nesting cover; it is too vigorous for small spaces but invaluable for restoring native forest understory structure.

Plant container-grown specimens in fall in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained to moderately wet soil in partial to full shade; supplejack is a woody vine that forms thickets and climbs high into the forest canopy — site it where it has room to naturalize or provide a large, sturdy arbor.
