'Ben Lomond' is a heavy-cropping Scottish black currant with large, aromatic berries high in vitamin C, ideal for cordials and preserves. It flowers slightly late, giving some protection from spring frosts, and tolerates a range of soils if kept moist. Plant deeply, burying the crown a couple of inches, to encourage strong shoots from the base. Prune in late winter by removing about a third of the oldest wood, since fruit is borne best on one- and two-year-old stems.
