Rex Begonia (King Begonia, Painted Begonia)

Plant in shallow, very well-drained, peat-based soil in bright indirect shade; rex begonias are grown almost exclusively for their spectacular foliage — the large, asymmetric leaves in patterns of silver, green, burgundy, red, pink, purple, copper, and bronze in bold swirling patterns are arguably the most ornamental of any leaf in the plant kingdom. Each cultivar has a unique, artistic pattern that looks almost hand-painted. They are outstanding container plants for shaded patios and covered porches where their foliage can be admired up close. As an outdoor shade garden plant in zone 10–12, they thrive under trees in similar conditions to calatheas and marantas.
