Bamboo Muhly (Soft Muhly, Bamboo Grass)

Plant in well-drained, lean soil in full sun to partial shade; bamboo muhly is a large, feathery ornamental grass that is often mistaken for young bamboo at first glance — the numerous, fine, arching stems bear tiny delicate leaves and produce an airy, light-filtering visual effect remarkably similar to a small bamboo clump but without the invasive spreading habit. It grows naturally in rocky canyon bottoms and streamside slopes in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Desert region, where it tolerates both drought and periodic flooding. Unlike most ornamental grasses that are grown primarily for fall plumes, bamboo muhly is grown mainly for its outstanding texture and motion — a billowing cloud of delicate stems that moves with the slightest breeze. It tolerates light shade and makes a superb screen or specimen. Cut back to 12 inches in late winter.
