Southern Indica Azalea

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic (pH 5.0–5.5) soil amended with pine bark in partial shade to morning sun with afternoon shade; Southern Indica azaleas are the classic massive-flowering shrubs of Deep South gardens, producing spectacular displays of white, pink, red, lavender, or salmon flowers in spring that completely cover the plant. These are large, fast-growing plants — give them full mature-size spacing rather than planting them too close. They are much more heat- and root-rot tolerant than Northern azaleas and are specifically bred for Gulf Coast conditions. Mulch deeply with pine straw to maintain moisture and soil acidity. Prune immediately after flowering ends in spring, as next year's buds set on summer growth. Lace bugs are the primary pest — treat with systemic insecticide in late spring.
