Опис

Black Mangrove is the most cold-tolerant and widespread of the three mangrove species native to Florida and the Gulf Coast, colonizing the mid- to upper intertidal zone above the Red Mangrove and tolerating periodic freezes that kill its more frost-sensitive relatives — a cold-hardiness that has allowed it to expand dramatically northward along Texas and Florida coasts as winters have warmed. The shallow, horizontally spreading root system produces thousands of pencil-shaped pneumatophores (air-breathing roots) that project vertically from the mud in dramatic, spiked mats, aerating the root system in oxygen-depleted estuarine sediments. Black Mangrove leaves excrete salt through special glands on their undersides, enabling survival in highly saline tidal mudflats; the flowers are an important nectar source for bees and produce the prized black mangrove honey marketed along the Gulf Coast. Plant in estuarine, tidal, or high-marsh substrate in full sun in Zones 9–11; Black Mangrove is protected in Florida and most coastal states and should only be established from nursery stock within its natural range. Спосіб посадки: Висадка розсади Відстань між рослинами: 96–180 дюймів Висота: 120–480 дюймів Дні до схожості: 7–21 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 18–29°C

The characteristic pencil-like pneumatophores (air roots) project upward from the mud — do not damage or bury them. Never plant outside of the natural range.
