Autumn Sage (Cherry Sage)

Plant in very well-drained, alkaline to neutral, lean to average soil in full sun; autumn sage is one of the most reliably blooming native shrubs in zone 7–9, producing bright red (or pink, white, coral, or burgundy in named cultivars) flowers from spring through hard frost — as close to continuous bloom as any woody plant achieves. It grows naturally on dry, rocky, limestone bluffs and canyon slopes in the Texas Hill Country and Chihuahuan Desert and is outstanding in zone 8–9 heat with excellent drainage. Ruby-throated and black-chinned hummingbirds are primary pollinators. Shear back by one-third in midsummer to encourage fresh growth and extended fall bloom. Named cultivars include 'Dark Dancer' (deep red), 'Furman's Red' (brilliant scarlet), and 'Big Pink' (soft pink). Deer resistant.
