Atamasco Lily (Easter Lily)

Plant bulbs 2–3 inches deep in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade; atamasco lily is a native zephyr lily of the Southeast, blooming in earliest spring (often around Easter, hence the common name) with large, pristine white funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from wet, grassy meadows, wet pinelands, and moist woodland openings from Virginia to Florida. Unlike most bulbs, it tolerates and actually prefers seasonally wet soil in spring followed by summer moisture (not drought). Plant in a low spot, under deciduous trees, or at a rain garden margin where it will receive extra moisture. The bulbs are toxic. The plant naturalizes readily in Gulf Coast gardens and may bloom sporadically in fall as well after rain events.
