Опис
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, moderately moist to dry, humus-rich soil in partial to deep shade — ebony spleenwort is one of the most widely distributed and adaptable native ferns in North America, distinguished by its narrow, once-pinnate fronds on shiny, dark reddish-brown to black (ebony) stems that give it its common name. It grows in an extraordinary range of conditions: dry, rocky woodland slopes; bases of limestone outcrops; pine forest floors; moist ravine walls; and the dry shade under large trees where most ferns would fail. Unlike many ferns, it tolerates moderately dry, rocky conditions that defeat less adaptable species. The fronds are semi-evergreen in zone 7–9, providing year-round greenery in shaded gardens. It self-sows by spores to naturalize quietly in appropriate shaded, well-drained conditions, never becoming weedy. An outstanding low-maintenance fern for dry shade under trees in southern gardens.

Plant divisions or container plants in fall or early spring in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, moderately moist to dry, humus-rich soil in partial to deep shade; ebony spleenwort is one of the most adaptable and drought-tolerant of all native ferns, succeeding in both moist woodland and dry, rocky conditions in shade.
