Опис
Plant corms in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in full to partial shade where seasonal moisture is available in spring but soil drains by midsummer. The distinctive hooded spathe (the pulpit) surrounding the upright spadix (Jack) appears in spring, followed by showy clusters of red berries on female plants in late summer. All parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals and are highly irritating if eaten raw; extensive traditional preparation was required by Indigenous peoples who used the corm as food. The plant dies back completely by midsummer; underplant with hostas or ferns to cover the gap.

Plant corms 2–4 inches deep in fall, flat side down; the corm size determines whether the plant produces a male or female flower — larger corms become female and produce bright-red berry clusters in fall.
