Anthurium (Flamingo Flower, Painter's Palette)

Plant in chunky, well-drained epiphytic mix in bright indirect light to deep shade — anthurium produces some of the most striking and long-lasting of all tropical flowers, with waxy, heart-shaped spathes in red, pink, white, coral, or burgundy surrounding a contrasting spadix, each spathe remaining attractive for 2–3 months. It is one of the most popular tropical houseplants worldwide and the most important cut flower in Hawaii's floriculture industry. As a garden plant in zone 10–12, it thrives in the deep shade of trees and covered patios, exactly where little else grows. The glossy, dark green leaves are themselves ornamental. It is sensitive to direct sun (which burns the leaves), overwatering, and temperatures below 55°F. In zone 9a it is an outstanding container plant for shaded patios, wintering indoors. Keep soil moderately moist and fertilize lightly every 6 weeks.
