Angel's Trumpet

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; angel's trumpet is among the most spectacular flowering plants in temperate-tropical horticulture, producing enormous (10–20 inch) pendulous trumpet-shaped flowers in white, yellow, peach, pink, or salmon that hang gracefully downward and fill the air with an intoxicating fragrance, particularly in the evening and night. With adequate water and nutrition, a well-established plant can produce 50–100 blooms simultaneously at peak season. Brugmansia is distinguished from Datura by its pendulous (not erect) flowers and woody, tree-like habit. All parts of the plant are extremely toxic — containing tropane alkaloids including scopolamine, atropine, and hyoscyamine — and should never be grown where children or pets may contact or ingest any part. In zone 8 it may die back in hard winters but regrows from established roots; in zone 9–11 it is evergreen and can be trained as a small tree. Propagate from 12-inch hardwood cuttings placed directly in moist soil.
