Опис
Plant in well-drained, dry to moderately moist, neutral to slightly alkaline, sandy or rocky soil in full sun; leadplant is a keystone prairie shrub considered by ecologists one of the best indicators of an intact, high-quality tallgrass prairie — its presence signals deep, healthy, undisturbed prairie soil, since its roots penetrate up to 16 feet deep. The silver-gray, pinnately compound leaves (with a lead-gray, canescent coating of dense fine hairs) are beautiful year-round and give the plant its name. The spikes of deep violet-purple flowers with bright orange anthers in summer are exceptional for native bumblebees and specialist bees. It is a nitrogen-fixing legume that improves soil fertility. The combination of extreme drought tolerance, nitrogen-fixing roots, and high bee value makes leadplant one of the most ecologically important prairie shrubs for habitat restoration and dry, sunny gardens.

Plant container-grown shrubs or root cuttings in spring in well-drained, dry to moderately moist, alkaline to neutral, sandy to rocky soil in full sun; leadplant has an extraordinarily deep root system (to 16 feet) and is extremely drought tolerant once established. Do not overwater.
