The fragrant lilac-purple flower clusters appear in late spring, with good repeat bloom through summer on named cultivars. Prune twice yearly — once after the main spring bloom and again in late winter — to maintain size and encourage blooming spurs. American wisteria is naturally found in moist lowlands and swamps and tolerates wetter conditions than Asian species; do not confuse with the highly invasive Japanese and Chinese wisterias.
