Direct sow in fall in well-drained, dry to moderately moist soil in full sun — American basketflower is a spectacular, large-flowered native annual of the Texas and Gulf Coast prairies, producing showy, 3–4 inch, thistle-like flower heads in shades of rose-pink to lavender-pink (and rarely white) with an intricate woven 'basket' of straw-colored bracts beneath the blooms — giving rise to the common name. Despite its thistle-like appearance, it is entirely spineless and easy to handle. The large, bright flower heads are superb for cutting and drying, and are heavily visited by bumblebees, honeybees, and monarch butterflies. It is one of the showiest and most easily grown native annuals for the southern prairie garden, blooming from May to July in a single, spectacular season and then self-sowing to return the following year. Outstanding in masses in wildflower meadows alongside Indian blanket, black-eyed Susan, and coneflowers.

Direct sow seed in fall in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, dry to moderately moist, sandy to loamy soil in full sun; American basketflower germinates in cool soil and is best sown in fall in Gulf Coast gardens, where it overwinters as a basal rosette and blooms profusely in late spring before summer heat.
