Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade; unlike the colonial serviceberry (A. canadensis), this species develops a single trunk to form a graceful multi-season small tree with spectacular clouds of white flowers in early spring, blueberry-like fruit in June, and brilliant orange-red fall foliage. The sweet berries ripen all at once in early summer and are excellent fresh, dried like raisins, or used in pies and jams; birds compete fiercely for the crop. Prune to remove crossing branches in late winter; do not top the tree. Cedar-apple rust and fire blight are potential problems in humid climates — ensure good air circulation around the canopy.
