Ambarella (June Plum, Golden Apple, Otaheite Apple)

Plant in very well-drained, fertile soil in full sun; ambarella is a fast-growing tropical fruit tree native to Melanesia and widely cultivated throughout the Pacific islands, Caribbean, and Southeast Asia for its versatile fruit. The oval, golden-yellow to orange fruits are eaten at all stages: the crisp, acidic green fruit is popular in Southeast Asian salads, slaws, and pickles with a tart mango-apple flavor, while fully ripe fruits are sweeter and eaten fresh. The fibrous pit germinates reliably in a few weeks. Ambarella is one of the faster-fruiting tropical trees, often bearing within 2–3 years from air-layers. It drops leaves briefly in dry season. In zone 9a it grows in a large container (25+ gallon) and must be moved indoors or into a greenhouse before the first frost; in zone 10+ it is an outstanding productive landscape tree.
