Amaryllis (Hippeastrum, Dutch Amaryllis)

Plant bulbs with the top half exposed in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun to partial shade; amaryllis (correctly Hippeastrum) is one of the most spectacularly beautiful of all bulbous plants, producing massive trumpet-shaped flowers 6–8 inches across in brilliant red, pink, white, coral, salmon, or bicolor striped patterns on hollow, leafless stalks 18–24 inches tall. In zone 8–10 amaryllis naturalizes beautifully in the garden, blooming each January through April without any special treatment — simply plant the bulbs in fall, fertilize lightly in fall and early spring, and allow the foliage to die back naturally each summer. Gulf Coast gardens are famous for spectacular outdoor amaryllis displays along entry walks and in foundation plantings. The large clumps multiply year by year to create a more impressive display. Indoor forcing in pots requires a 6–8 week dry rest period at cool temperatures before returning to warmth and water.
