Only second-year canes flower; cut spent canes to the ground after bloom to make room for new growth. The variegated form ('Variegata') has gold-striped foliage and is slightly smaller. Plants freeze to the ground in zone 8 frosts but re-emerge from hardy rhizomes in spring with deep mulch protection.
