Algerian Ivy (Canary Island Ivy, Canariensis Ivy)

Plant cuttings in moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; Algerian ivy is the superior ivy for Gulf Coast zone 7–10 gardens — larger-leaved, more heat tolerant, and more drought tolerant than English ivy, making it better suited to the summer conditions of the Gulf South. The leaves are 3–8 inches across, rich glossy green (sometimes with a reddish tint in winter), and distinctly larger than the familiar English ivy. The variegated form 'Gloire de Marengo' has silvery gray-green leaves with creamy white margins and is one of the most beautiful of all shade vines. Like English ivy it can climb by aerial roots and spreads vigorously as a groundcover, but has a less aggressive spreading habit than English ivy and is less likely to invade natural areas. Still, plant with care and keep away from forest edges.
