Alabama Snow-Wreath

Alabama Snow-Wreath is one of the rarest native shrubs in North America, a monotypic genus (the only species in its genus) restricted in the wild to a handful of limestone bluffs and rocky river slopes in northwestern Alabama and a very few widely scattered natural populations in other southeastern states. In April and May it produces a cloud of unusual, feathery, white, petal-less flowers — the 'petals' are entirely absent, and the display comes entirely from numerous long white stamens — giving the shrub an airy, ethereal appearance reminiscent of its common name. An adaptable plant in cultivation that grows well in partial shade in a wide range of soils from dry and rocky to moderately moist, Alabama Snow-Wreath is easy to propagate from cuttings and is increasingly available from specialty native plant nurseries. Never collect from wild populations — purchase only from nurseries that propagate their own plants from cultivated stock.
